SAARC panel decides to dissolve 4 regional bodies

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Programming Committee that started here today ahead of the 18th SAARC Summit decided to scrap three SAARC Centres and merge four others.
The Programming Committee recommended the cancellation of SAARC Information Centre, SAARC Human Resource Development Centre and SAARC Documentation Centre.
Likewise, the Committee has recommended merging of SAARC Forestry Centre, SAARC Disaster Management Centre, SAARC Coastal Zone Management Centre and SAARC Meteorological Research Centre.
SAARC General Secretary Arjun Bahadur Thapa said that final touch would be given to the recommendation from December 2016.
The meeting is also expected to change the structure of the SAARC and assign responsibilities.
Joint Secretaries of the foreign ministries of all eight member countries are participating in the meeting being held at Hotel Soaltee.
On the occasion, the Maldives handed over the chair of the Programming Committee to Nepal.
Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yagya Bahadur Hamal is leading the Nepali delegation in the meeting -
